10 Effective Ways to Extend the Lifespan of Your Generator


Regular maintenance is essential to ensure your generator operates reliably and has a long service life. Timely oil and filter changes, periodic operation under load, and proper fuel system maintenance help prevent excessive wear of internal engine components. By following the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, you can extend your generator's lifespan and ensure reliable performance whenever you need it.

1. Change the Engine Oil on Time

Old or contaminated engine oil increases friction between internal engine components, causing them to wear out more quickly.

The first oil change should be performed after the generator's initial 25–50 hours of operation. Subsequent oil changes should be carried out every 100–200 operating hours or at least once a year.

Always use engine oil with the viscosity grade recommended by the manufacturer.

2. Operate the Generator Under the Correct Load

Running a generator continuously at maximum capacity or under an excessively light load can significantly reduce its service life.

  • Operating at maximum load may cause the engine to overheat.
  • Diesel generators running under very light loads may experience wet stacking, where unburned fuel accumulates in the exhaust system.

The ideal operating range is between 30% and 70% of the generator's rated capacity.

3. Maintain the Air Filter

A dirty air filter restricts airflow to the engine, increases fuel consumption, and places additional stress on the engine.

  • Foam air filters can be cleaned with soapy water.
  • Paper air filters should generally be replaced every 50 operating hours or at least once a year.

4. Maintain Fuel Quality

Gasoline deteriorates over time and may leave deposits inside the carburetor.

If the generator will remain unused for an extended period:

  • Add a fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank.
  • Run the generator for several minutes to allow the stabilizer to circulate throughout the fuel system.

This helps protect the entire fuel system.

5. Drain the Fuel System Before Long-Term Storage

If you do not plan to use a portable gasoline generator for a long period, close the fuel valve and allow the generator to continue running until all the fuel has been consumed.

This will:

  • Empty the carburetor completely;
  • Remove fuel from the fuel lines;
  • Prevent the formation of fuel deposits.

6. Run the Generator Once a Month

Generators that remain unused for long periods may suffer from dried internal components and reduced engine performance.

It is recommended to operate the generator under load for at least 15–20 minutes once every month.

This allows:

  • Engine oil to circulate throughout all internal components;
  • Moisture to evaporate;
  • Moving parts to remain properly lubricated.

7. Inspect the Spark Plug Regularly

A dirty or damaged spark plug may cause difficult starting or prevent the generator from starting altogether.

Approximately every 100 operating hours:

  • Clean the spark plug;
  • Check for cracks or damage;
  • Measure and adjust the electrode gap according to the manufacturer's specifications.

8. Keep the Battery Fully Charged

The battery is one of the most common sources of failure in electric-start generators.

To maintain battery performance:

  • Clean corrosion from the battery terminals;
  • Check that all connections are secure;
  • If the generator will remain unused for a long period, keep the battery charged using a low-current battery maintainer.

9. Ensure Proper Ventilation Around the Generator

Adequate airflow is essential for proper generator cooling.

During operation:

  • Leave at least 1 meter (3 feet) of clearance on all sides of the generator;
  • Never operate the generator in enclosed spaces;
  • Make sure the exhaust outlet is directed away from doors and windows.
